It’s a joy spending time with my friends in Ethiopia, a female-led collective that provides sustainable incomes, education, opportunities and respect to their community (50% of the staff is women and 75% of the management positions are held by women).

November 25th is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. 1 in 3 women will experience violence in their lifetimes, and today starts 16 days of activism against gender-based violence. From today until December 10th, Human Rights Day, we unite with a call for action to raise our voices and help end violence against women.

Deeply rooted gender inequality must be replaced with laws that protect women and institutions to help rebuild women’s lives, along with the wonderful work of organizations across the globe that provide opportunities for women to build better futures for themselves and their families, on their own terms.

We must end domestic abuse, child marriage, female genital mutilation, human trafficking, sexual abuse, sexual harassment. In war, the first victims are women and girls. And ending violence against women also helps to end conflict.

The first step is to break the silence and to come together in a chorus of voices against violence. Speak up so that someone else won’t have to in the future. She will just be free.

One of my greatest passions is to uplift women, and I am so inspired by the incredible women and men working every day to amplify the voices of others and to protect their freedom, their happiness, and their rights. Leave no one behind.

Listen to women. Have conversations and learn how you can support a woman’s right to her body, her finances, her education, her future. Speak up for women. Most of all, pass the mic and let them speak up for themselves, and believe them when they do.

We must do better. Let’s invest in women and girls worldwide, and in doing so, a better future for us all.

What will you do today to support, celebrate, and uplift a woman?
